Raven and Eagle, crest symbols of the two main phratries or clans of the Tlingit (natives of Southeast Alaskan coast) people, coming together as yin and yang elements. According to Tlingit tradition, everyone had to marry into the opposite clan; Ravens to marry Eagles and Eagles to Ravens. Usually art pieces depicted one or the other phratry and their sub-clans, but whenever the two were represented on the same piece, it was considered the love or marriage theme.
